Derived from the phrase "costume play", cosplay typically refers to the practice of anime and/or video game fen dressing up as their favorite characters.
The cosplayer who most regularly shows up in wank reports is Usagi Kou.
Considering its current reputation, it may be surprising that costuming dates back to the early days of fandom. The late great original BNF, Forrest J. Ackerman, wore the first "futuristicostume" (designed and created by his then-girlfriend, Myrtle R. Douglas) to the very first World Science Fiction Convention in 1939.[1]
