On LiveJournal and other similar sites, a friend is a journal you've added to your reading list. The act of doing so is called friending, and dropping someone from the list is defriending.
Because friending someone lets them read your locked posts if you don't know how or are too lazy to use filters, this can cause wank. People also wank if they never get friended back, or when they find being defriended insulting. Sometimes they even wank when they don't get defriended. And, occasionally, they get confused by the idea of "friends" and wank for no obvious reason other than the fact that they have a ready-made audience. Ultimately, "defriending" is one of nature's most powerful wank lubricants.
