How It Began
December 9, 2005: It seemed like such a small kerfuffle at first. Two moderators (biting_moopie and atrata) posted in their LiveJournals saying politely that they were no longer affiliated with Detention, a popular Snarry archive in the Harry Potter fandom. The posts also warned authors that the former moderators weren't sure whether the archive would continue to exist, and suggested authors might want to save their work and their reviews. The posts explained the moderators had been unable to contact the main archivist, Page (individum), in over a month, and had posted something in the associated LiveJournal community asking for assistance in contacting her and talking about setting up a temporary archive to host artwork and fanfic, since they had no ability to update the site. One of the moderators claimed to pay half the operating costs of the site.
Seeing their posts, the archivist had deleted them from the community, blocked their access to the site and community, and posted a rant about them in the community journal insisting the archive was definitely not closing.
She followed it up in short order with another post accusing the former moderators of trying to take credit for her hard work.
There were a few wanky posts to the LJ community in response, and the archivist deleted one of the authors, but, by and large, Fandom_Wank was not interested.
Instead, a random discussion started on Doctor Who, and another on the sheer stupidity of Harry Potter Pairing Names.[1][2]
Blame Fandom_Wank!
Then, in a development that grabbed Fandom_Wank's full attention, the archivist deleted the archive and said that everyone could blame Fandom_Wank for it.
And the anonymice came, filled with rage.[3][4][5][6] [7]
Naturally, someone did stats.[8] And someone else wrote a song.[9]
(Killing an archive with only 22 comments, only 8 of which might have been related to the wank! A new Fandom_Wank record!)
The anonymice continued to appear-- though it was strongly suspected several were Page herself.[10]
And Fandom_Wank concluded, naturally, that the Doctor Who thread was obviously the underlying cause for the archive's deletion.[11]
The Continuing Wank
Not content with deleting the archive, Page reappeared with yet another post on the community associated with the archive, declaring herself pleased that people were missing the archive since its deletion.
She also posted screencaps of biting_moopie's emails which... essentially proved that everything the moderators had said was correct.
Oddly, Page seemed completely unwilling to acknowledge that the entire problem might have been averted if she had simply emailed her comoderators in advance to let them know she was planning to take a break from fandom, or responded to any of their emails.
A few days after the wank, Page deleted the LiveJournal community associated with the Detention archive.[12]
The Meme
Fandom_Wank's loopywafflehead (biting_moopie) began responding to anonymice with random praise of Alan Rickman[13] -- apparently because Page hates Alan Rickman.[14] (One wonders what Page was doing in Alan RickmanSnape fandom, then...) It was picked up by Fandom_Wank in general, and the wank featured numerous variations on "Alan Rickman is Hot" in place of Okay!.
Because, after all, he is.[15]
The Other Meme
Since Doctor Who was so effective in killing Snarry, he is frequently summoned in other Harry Potter wanks, especially those featuring Harmonians.
Hope springs eternal.
