Part One: The Proposal

In late March 2004, Smallville star Tom Welling went to a fan convention, a unique occurence, since Welling hadn't done fan conventions beforehand. All was going well, until a girl proposed to him. Not jokingly, but wide-eyed and earnest. Welling freaked out and scurried out of the room.

The girl posted on the Smallville fansite Kryptonsite under the nick TomWellingLuvsMe. She was widely condemned in the fandom for her proposal, so she decided to... well, let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Part Two: The Lex Mafia

July 23, 2004: It is brought to the attention of Fandom Wank that there's a war on in the Kryptonsite forums. A group of Lex Luthor fangirls calling themselves 'The Lex Mafia' were prowling the forums abusing fans of Clark Kent.

“ I don't really give a shit about Lex OR Clark one way or the other, and even I can see that these girls turn every. single. Clark thread into a sploogefest about how Clark is a brain-dead evilmonger and Lex is just an unfairly maligned, innocent victim "woobie" (A POX ON THE HOUSE OF WHOEVER INVENTED THAT WORD BTW.) When they get told to get back on topic, they insist that it IS on topic, argue every word of every moderator's request, and PM back and forth with any moderator who does so. ”

Fed up with harassment by the 'Lex Mafia', mod Universal Mother told them what she thought of them, and soon every Lex fan on the forums was asking for an apology. Miss Windy and Universal Mother were vilified as evil, Lex-hating, overbearing mods.

Part Three: Wrath of the Sockpuppets

July 25, 2004: MissWindy posts on Fandom Wank with a startling revelation.

“ People, this is the craziest thing I've ever seen. And yes, I'm counting the woman who went into labor becuase of a Clay Aiken wank, the people who got their nemeses fired over their Harry Potter porn, Victoria Bitter, and CrystalGamgee. This is a whole new level. Of what I don't know! ”

MissWindy had gone to ban some of the 'Lex Mafia' for trolling behaviour and discovered they had matching IP addresses! She shared the information with LexsBitch67, who'd felt Lex fans were getting a bum rush from the mods. Two days of detective work unearthed 28 alternate identities for this person, including TomWellingLuvsMe.

All her personalities pre-May-convention were pro-Clark. All her personalities post-May-convention were anti-Clark.

What's more, she had kept all the personalities going full time, each with different opinions, backstories, writing styles etc. And then, she'd moved them into a war with each other to create a rift in the fandom that'd despised her. 2/3 of the 'Lex Mafia' was composed of her sockpuppets. The other third were innocent posters who got taken in by her stories of maltreatment.

Epilogue: Icons!

  • thewashinator: I just can't imagine attempting to corral that many pseuds at one time. Hell, the idea of even having ONE false identity and trying to play both yourself and another person seems so incredibly difficult and pointless to me. So, I am both admiring and terrified of Whatever Her Name Is This Week, because that took some dedication. My God, imagine if these people used their crazy powers for good and not evil!
