Fanart is simply artwork depicting characters and/or situations from a fandom. Fanart can take many forms-- from pencil drawings to oil paintings to custom-made dolls. And like all things fannish, it can frequently lead to wank.

Common sources of wank

"Fanart" that is copied from official materials, such as character designs and screenshots. One commonly-voiced reason why this practice is controversial is because it doesn't require nearly as much skill as doing "original" fanart.
- A notable variant of this is fanart that is, in fact, a Photoshopped version of an actual official image. Of course, probably the best example of this sort of thing is CrystalWank.
Fanart that is copied (or directly stolen) from another fanartist.
Fanart where the content itself is controversial, or just plain wrong.

One curious aspect about fanart is that the practice of selling it isn't considered as evil as it is with fanfiction, so long as the price covers only the materials used, and sometimes other expenses as well (such as postage or convention fees).

Note: Fanart should certainly not be confused with doujinshi, which is of course better because it's Japanese.
