Fanwank

In short, fanwank is when a fan goes, "This development in canon makes no sense. However, it would make sense if only they had said, done, or suggested this other thing, which they didn't, but probably should, would, or could have." If enough people like and perpetuate a given fanwank, it can become fanon. Usually this is a relatively harmless activity designed to make the fan feel better about things, hence the name.

When a fandom's actual writers or producers do this same thing, it is called a retcon. Because of this, batshit insane fans sometimes assume their fanwank is the same as canon, which can lead to actual wank -- particularly when their fanfic or theories are Jossed.

Less often, but especially in the Doctor Who fandom, fanwank means canon excessive references to continuity to get the fanboys all hot. You know, those little references that make you squee and you find hard to explain to your more casual fan friends. Yeah, like that.
