Space cowboys, yay!

Created by Joss Whedon of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame, which caused a fair bit of fandom overlap. The show was cancelled after one season, although fannish pressure did help the production of a spin-off movie Serenity. That didn't do too well either.

Fans of the show call themselves 'Browncoats' and are a vaguely cultish entity, bulk-buying DVD boxsets and proselytizing their cause to any that will listen and a whole bunch more that won't. Hence they were blamed for the poor performance of the film, and thus the lack of the proposed sequels. Oops.
