Gryffindor Tower, also known as GT, was a Harry Potter fanfiction archive specializing in Harry/Ginny fic that caused many to think that H/G shippers were on drugs, but not the right ones. The seven admins of Gryffindor Tower -- Paula (Firebolt909), Imogen, Anne (Tartanboxers), Marian (LadyMaidMarian), Carissa, Caitlyn, and Amy (Cranberry27) -- dubbed themselves "The Queens of H/G" and were involved in countless episodes of fandom wank during GT's two years of existence. Gryffindor Tower crashed and burned in the summer of 2003 because the Queens ate their young.
Contrary to popular belief, GT didn't die because anyone forgot to renew the site - the admins had just paid for another year. It died because of animosity between two of the Queens that turned into animosity between two groups. One Friday night, members of one group were in a chat, talking about how insanely bored they were with the site. They recruited a few mods to help them wreak a little havoc on the message board by changing member titles and post counts, and were thinking of doing something wildly uninventive like changing the site's colors as a joke. One of the mods, either totally misunderstanding or making a bid to suck up, alerted the other group that a hostile takeover was taking place.
Being on very bad terms with their former friends and fellow Queens already, Anne and Marian (who later melted down on the Yahoo group) locked the chat participants out of the boards by taking away their admin and mod privileges. In retaliation, Amy and Imogen tried to change the password to the main site. This crashed the boards, which pretty much caused panic, mass hysteria, and a whole lot of self-righteous anger and finger-pointing. Not knowing there was a spy in their midst, Amy and Imogen mentioned the new password in the chat, the spy promptly reported it to Anne and Marian, and the site was shut down after both groups sprayed graffiti all over it (a drawn-out process that entertained the whole fandom for several days).
The group including Anne, Marian, Carissa, and several mods ended up with control the boards, made a very private email public, and eventually closed the site after naming a few new queens and insulting a lot of people's personal tragedies. Unfortunately, they had broken their own toy, and none of the Queens had anybody to adore them anymore. Anne and Marian started BitchnMoan.net, Imogen went back to her own site, and poor Caitlyn showed up a week later not having a clue what had happened.
Conflict With Fiction Alley
Gryffindor Tower had a long and contentious history with Fiction Alley. This began in November/December 2001, with an online stalker who targeted Cassandra Claire. The stalker has been reported to have had the same IP address as a Gryffindor Tower Queen (Chryslin), and her husband allegedly signed a confession. As part of a reported agreement to avoid charges, Chryslin and her husband agreed to leave Gryffindor Tower.
Subsequently, there were a series of LiveJournal trolls (including fermatojam, pottersginny, and watchful_entity) who claimed affiliation with Gryffindor Tower and targeted Fiction Alley moderators. All of these appeared repeatedly on Fandom_Wank. Since that time, evidence has been presented suggesting that all of these trolls were sockpuppets of Msscribe, a Fiction Alley moderator and sometime member of the Inner Circle. At the time, however, these were generally accepted to be associated with Gryffindor Tower, and this bias appears in contemporary wank reports, many of which were written by Fiction Alley moderators.
