Harmony is one of many names for the pairing of Harry Potter and Hermione Granger. The term was coined by H/Hr shipper Mad Eye Mike for the Mugglenet "Love thread" debates.

Following the release of Harry Potter Balboa, which made Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione canon, the bulk of H/Hr shipping wank came from shippers identifying as Harmonians. The abundance of wank about Harmony (and the similar Dan/Emma) eventually led to the creation of HP Cornfield.

"Harmony" has since come to refer to the ideology that Harry and Hermione are archetypal soulmates whose pure romantic love for one another is the major theme of the entire series. By this definition not all H/Hr shippers are Harmonians. A H/Hr shipper wanks because s/h/it's pairing got Jossed. A Harmonian wanks because JK Rowling is undermining her own literary masterwork and teaching little girls everywhere to despair of marrying Mr. Right and settle for Mr. Right's unremarkable roommate. (The wanker Ginny Weasley tends to abuse this distinction.)

Common tenets in Harmony include:

The elevation of romantic love above base sexual attraction. This form of Madonna/whore complex rationalizes why the "monster" in Harry's chest when he thinks about Ginny doesn't really count. It also contributes to an acute overabundance of whores in the novels. The possibility that Harry Potter might like to someday get naked with a real live girl is anathema to Harmony.

The demonization of Ron and Ginny. Ron in particular is considered abusive due to his ~~sexual tension~~ animosity with Hermione in the earlier books. The ironic reversal of their relationship is considered ludicrous. On the other hand, the ironic reversal of Harry and Hermione each falling for other characters and then suddenly jumping on each other in the last book makes perfect sense.

Scrutiny of irrelevant details. Since Rowling is not actually writing a Harmonian saga, it takes a lot of effort to read one between the lines. For example, if Harry and Hermione go fly on a hippogriff without Ron because he broke his leg, that's proof that Harry and Hermione are meant for each other. However, if Harry kisses Ginny on the mouth that doesn't mean anything, and some douchebag will edit this article to remove references to H/G becoming canon.

The importance of romantic love as a plot point. Harry will somehow defeat Voldemort by figuring out that he's been in love with Hermione, not that slut Ginny. This trope is familiar to anyone who thrilled to the final triumph over Mr. Weatherbee in Archie Pals 'N' Gals Double Digest #250.

The significance of the Harry Potter novels to mankind. It would not be merely unfortunate if the books do not get the gatekeeper and the keymaster together, it would be catastrophic. The popularity of the series makes it critical that Rowling use her position to instruct the world on how boys and girls should fall in love. Exposing millions of readers to dangerous ideas like Harry/Ginny or Ron/Hermione could warp entire societies. It greatly appeals to Harmonians that their ship name is not simply a clever portmanteau but also a connection between their OTP and universal brotherhood.

Communities

The HMS Harmony Forums are where the Harmonians hang out. It's a goldmine of wank. The forum has alternated between locked and unlocked; currently registration is screened.
