When someone uses a dictionary to tell someone else what they really meant, all meaningful discussion ceases, to be replaced with arguments over whether the definition is correct.

Corollary 1: When someone ignores a dictionary definition to use etymology or idiolect to tell someone what they really meant, all meaningful discussion ceases and the aspiring linguist loses.

Unless the argument in question is about the meaning or origin of words or phrases. Then the person who pulls out the Oxford English Dictionary wins.
