Icon
From Fandom wank wiki

An icon, or userpic, is a 100x100 square image used as an avatar on Livejournal-based journaling systems. They're used to represent yourself, your moods or feelings, your interests, etc.
Apparently, they're also a major, cutting-edge art form. Don't steal them or use Anne Rice's pixels to make them, either.
Advice to new journaling systems: free icons make a great bribe! The prospect of large numbers of icons is a typical enticement to join a new site, but if you cut them down, your users will flee screaming to another one. And it's well known that LJ could make their controversial news posts more palatable if they'd just include 5 more free icons with each tyrannical decree.
Note! Any comment you make on Fandom Wank, as a wanker or wanka, can and will be turned into an icon. This icon will be disseminated throughout the Internet within twenty-four hours. You may or may not be notified, credited, or appreciated. Consider it your sacrifice to the Greater Good (The Greater Good). But if you keep an eye out, often these icons are offered up to the public on the community Fandom Wank Icons.
Wanks of note
- You'd better credit the icon creator. EVEN IF IT'S YOU!
- It's not a BOX! It's a BORDER!
- You need to credit the artist, not just the iconist
- You want these icons? You gotta run the gauntlet, first

- LJ gives paid users more icons, wank ensues. As it does every time LJ changes anything.
- Just because you crop an image into 100x100 pixels does not make it an icon
