An Explanation By... Someone
- When I and a bunch of folk entered the fandom 18 months ago, some of the folks who had been around a while longer (like Stacey and Cassie) called us intellislashers. Because we were into the meta (yes, that's wanky!), and some of these people are amazing writers, like Olympia and Penelope-Z, and they were producing fics that were a little more ambitious than what folks were writing at the time, when the fandom was much smaller.
- Obviously once we heard people calling us intellislashers we all fought against the term because (1) what the hell is intellislash supposed to mean? All of these folks write in really different styles, and (2) it sounds ridiculous and elitist.
- But it never went away, and so finally as a huge piss-take we started the archive. I understand that the joke may not be clear to some, but it was never an attempt to say we were better than anyone else. It was just mostly making fun of ourselves, and anyone who would be stupid enough to keep shoving this dumb label upon us.
- Now you can argue that maybe it was a mistake for us to try to reclaim this term. You're probably right. I for one wish it had never been invented, simply because it sounds so elitist and pretentious. But again, we didn't invent the term, it was forced upon us by other folks. It drives me crazy when people say, "Who the fuck do they think they are? They think they're so much better than everyone else!" when most of us hardly write at all. [1]
