LOL Meme is a formerly-JournalFen-based anonymeme, now located on Dreamwidth.[1] It's quite unusual for an anonymeme, in that it's been active for over 3.5 years and has managed not to be deleted or TOSed in that time. As of this writing, it has over 9000 1300 posts and 6.5 million comments. (Far surpassing F_W in comment count, although it has a long way to go to catch up with ohnotheydidnt.) It's rather fascinating to watch this non-stop growth, produced as the anonymice get through yet another near-daily post of 5,000 (or more) CAPSLOCKED comments.

So far, the meme has spawned several RPGs, a chat room, spinoff communities, and its own peculiar subculture of named mice and catchphrases. Believe it or not, they have a wiki where you can sometimes find explanations of the above. A few wanks have even made it to Fandom Wank via the meme, either reported in the style of Wank Report, or resulting from the wankiness of the participants.[2]

The anonymeme was founded in August 2006 as a simple humor-based meme, thus the "LOL".[3] But after a metawank on Bad Penny and the bahleetion of Aja's anonymemes (see Bad Penny is NOT a Fandom Wank Community and this thread), it gained popularity and its current success.

Shortly after the one-year anniversary, the JFA discovered the meme was a bit of a drain on JF's resources. The meme moved temporarily to their then-alternate location at GreatestJournal, but after talks with the JFA and some server upgrades, they triumphantly returned to JF. (Good timing, since GJ proceeded to implode after LJ's Strikethrough.)

Nevertheless, after talks with one of the founders of Dreamwidth (a memer herself), the meme moved to that new LJ clone in April 2009 -- originally as an alternate location, and then permanently. Who knows what the future will bring?
