Big fandom. Lots of wank. Especially in the RPS section.
Started out mainly with respectable academic groups in the '50s. Then the flower generation got hold of it in the '60s and it's been downhill from there. Frodo lives, man.
Was somewhat clandestine (but no less wanky) for most of its existence, but then the movies came out in the early '00s and the fandom's numbers (and wank) grew exponentially.
Loosely based around the books by JRR Tolkien.
The books are too much work for wiki contributors to summarize here; fortunately, a wiki-approved synopsis has been located.
