Meta is, quite literally, a prefix.

As a word itself (originally used this way by internet hackers), it is usually used mockingly in reference to things that are self-quandaring or existential, and often psuedointelligent.

It technically means "one level above", therefore a meta-language is a language that is used to describe language, and something meta-physical is something that is beyond normal feeling.

Sometimes when a wank goes meta, we end up with implosions. (See also Wankitywank.)
