My Prose is Violet (Because Purple Isn't a Color)

June 7, 2005: (From the Wank Report) A fanfic author (cupnjava) posts a yaoi story on a community dedicated to her pairing. The sex isn't an issue, but the writing is-- it's replete with descriptions such as "Pondering violet found playful emerald" and "Violet eyes opened and shifted between seas of emerald."

There's some criticism of the overblown writing. In response, the author says:

There were three words I could think of (granted, I didn't go searching through a theasaurus or anything): purple, violet, and amethyst. I picked violet. The reasons for this are:

1) Purple is not technically a color. It is not in the spectrum. I, personally, do not like the word purple. It reminds me of bruises.

2) One of the defintions of purple is "marked by profanity" not a place I wanted to go.

3) Amethyst -- that gives the wrong connection to "emerald". I didn't want to do the gem thing.

4) Violet is in the spectrum; thus, it is in the rainbow.

5) Violet is a type of flower.

6) Violet connects the two ways Hakkai (in this fic) sees Sanzo's eyes. As part of the rainbow and as wet wildflowers.

Besides, cupnjava is all about the visuals, eyes are windows to the soul, and constant repetition of eye colors allows her to avoid the tedious repetition of the characters' names.

Also, her friends appear to inform the critics they're just jealous (and wrong) because they don't have as many fangirls.

Fandom_Wank is fascinated to learn that purple isn't a color.

Quotes

  • "Violet eyes blinked as brunet strands swam in a sea of blue. There were those ruddy lips of his thoughts. Slightly puffy from the heaving kissing. Emerald eyes a shade darker almost like Hakkai was beginning to call to a chained animalist side." - from cupnjava's fic [1]
  • tips of white teeth teased violet eyes
"Am I the only one who pictured these teeth nibbling on the actual eyeball?" - friendly_cow [2]
  • "If I see it, it's a color. If it's a color, I can say it when I'm writing about people's eyes staring longingly as they touch their gay lover's no-no bad place." - daromaius [3]
  • "Purple is not a 'real colour'? Then what IS it, dumbass?" - aerobot
"A pigment of our imagination." - smo [4]
