Oulangi: Just A Reader

Part One: She's reviewing my fics! Stop her!
July 15, 2006: Oulangi decided to review a whole bunch of Snarry fics on her LJ. One reviewed author, Ptyx, called attention to this sociopathic behaviour.
- "Frankly? I wish I could prevent [info]oulangi from commenting my fics. Not because she's mocking some of the fics she reads (which is a behaviour I don't approve of), but because I wouldn't like people to read my stories through the filter of her reviews. She's intelligent and witty, but she's just a reader. She has her preferences. Your reaction to my story might be very different from hers, but if you start reading it after reading her comment, I'm afraid this will affect your experience. I can't prevent that, I know. But I don't like the whole idea."
Apparently, Ptyx was finally speaking out for those who had been hitherto forced into silence, for many other of the Snarry writers applauded her brave stand, and joined in her calls for a world with no more reviews.
Contrary to popular assumption, however, Oulangi is not just a reader. [1]
Ptyx's post is now locked, but here's a screencap[2] and you can read lots of it in the Wank Report.
Quotes
- "Oulangi is a fandom-wanker. I think everyone pretty much knows what that means." - Ataniell to Ptyx, quoted on FW [3]
- "...What that means == 'She knows far too much about my vagina and the current and past contents thereof.'" - nitch, in kabal_quotes[4]
- "HOW DARE PEOPLE THINK IT'S CUTE AND AMUSING FOR SOMEONE TO RIP APART ANOTHER PERSON'S WORK??? THAT'S WHAT I WANT TO KNOW AND HOW EXACTLY IS IT A GOOD THING THAT THESE IDIOTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO CONTINUE???" - sevs_lil_secret, quoted in the Wank Report
Part Two: Reviews Will Out
July 19, 2006: Campfollower, previously featured on Fandom Wank as positing that mean girls turn nice girls mean, posted a long reflection on why Oulangi's reviews struck at the basis of civilized society.
The weird bit was her evident belief that Oulangi had been trying to keep the reviews a secret, and had now been exposed.
Quotes
- "Oulangi, in relative obscurity, reads every thing posted on a certain HP fic list and quietly posts reviews of every fic in her journal. Since she reviews every fic posted, some fic gets a good review, some does not. And some of the negative reviews are snarky. It wasn't widely known on the fic list that she was reviewing every fic, that there were negative reviews, that there was snark.
Well, it all came out, as it always does." - Campfollower [5]
- "I love how she implies that oulangi was trying to keep these despicably snarky reviews a big secret." - Tunxeh [6]
- "Those damn secret snarky ninja reviewers! Don't they know they can never get away with it, because of the meddling fragile authorial flowers?" - limyaael
- "The only kind of mockery that is justified is mockery that is used by the relatively powerless against the very powerful, when the stakes are high. Like political satire. Editorial cartooning. George Bush, not Mary Sue." - Campfollower [7]
- "And how effective can mocking George Bush possibly be if he's mocked by someone who never, ever mocked anyone else since Kindergarten cause mocking is wrong unless it's a cause of national importance? Hu? I mean, what will they come up with when the stakes are high? Will they say he looks silly? Will they say he has a small pee-pee? What? - Ashenmote [8]
Part Three: A Lonely, Delicate Flower
August 3, 2006: Oulangi wasn't the only one to disturb the Harry Potter fandom's peace by writing reviews. It was Furiosity who set off the next review implosion. But a lot of the combatants took it as Oulangi's fault, anyway.
On the one hand, Moonlight_tryst didn't like the idea of Furiosity reveiwing her fics because that might shatter her confidence. On the other hand, she admitted that no one would stop reviewing just for her. That didn't stop her friends-list from going nuts, of course, so Moonlight_tryst deleted the entry to try to get rid of the fighting.
It didn't work. Eeyore9990 took the review battle directly to Oulangi's LJ.[9] Then she wrote an allegorical fanfic, in which Harry Potter disciplines Oulangi and Furiosity a bunch of bullies for attacking an innocent child. [10]. Dedicated to All the Fragile Flowers and Speshul Snowflakes.
Screen caps are in the Wank Report.
Quotes
- "Mind you, I haven't read it completely...*is cautious* ...but from what I seen moonlight_tryst is a wonderful exception in so far as she seems to be a delicate flower without entitlement issues. And those are really rare and unique snowflakes in fandom." - ashenmote [11]
- "Agreed" - Furiosity
- "You do know you're part of the silent majority, yes? Similar to how the overwhelming majority of Americans feel about Bush..." - mordryn4 to moonlight_tryst, quoted in the Wank Report
- "Lots of people are hurt, scared and/or just annoyed by your reviews. Most of them have been writing for at least a year. I know that must be frustrating to you, that they won't say it to your face, but they fear the backlash." - mordryn4 to furiosity [12]
- "As to people acting like adults? In what society do adults point and laugh at other's efforts? In what society do they find it amusing to ridicule certain people over and over and over?" - eeyore9990 [13]
