The world of Harry Potter is set in a thriving society of wizards, spread across the globe and numbering in the thousands, if not millions. Obviously JK Rowling isn't going to have time in seven books to fully develop every single character. Like Blaise Zabini. With no canon to go on except the name, Harry Potter fandom cast Blaise as a girl in fanfic such as Pawn to Queen, and then as a gorgeous Italian boy. Hooray to fanon for inventing details that Rowling will never ever get around to contradicting, right?

July 17, 2005: Within days of the release of Harry Potter 6: Seed of Chucky, LiveJournal's _blaise_zabini community is dealing with the fallout. As kitsune_blaze puts it:

That *tear* really puts it all in perspective, doesn't it? You maniacs! You turned him black! Aw, damn you, JK Rowling! Damn--you--all--to hell!

kitsune_blaze proceeds to dig herself even deeper, showing all the tact of someone who cares more about fanon than the entire human race with "But maybe he's still cute." Right about there the whole community turns against her. They don't mind if canon just revealed that Blaise is male and black. Hell no--how could they be so superficial? Besides, they're just happy canon confirmed that Blaise is hot.

Moral: it's not the color of your skin that counts, it's whether fangirls would have sex with you.


December 5, 2005: FPB weighs in on why he's upset that Blaise Zabini gets maybe two lines in six books and is less important than Rosencrantz and Guildenstern put together is black.
