Background

OK, apparently in Harry Potter V: Tokyo Drift, Marietta Edgecombe tried to betray the good guys to the bad guys, which set off a spell of Hermione's, causing zits to appear on her forehead forming the word "SNEAK." As of Harry Potter 6: Rise of the Machines, the word is still visible due to scarring from the acne, demonstrating that the effect of the hex lasts at least six months is permanent. When Harry sees Marietta, he thinks it's kind of funny.

In Harry Potter fandom there are two schools of thought on the incident: "Marietta got what she had coming to her" vs. "Hermione is history's greatest monster."

The Wank

July 4, 2006: Sistermagpie posts her thoughts on the "SNEAK" incident, arguing that fans shouldn't need to be able to sympathize with Marietta to disagree with Hermione to "create a hex so powerful it disfigures a person potentially forever." Marionros (who doesn't like people judging a character solely on whether they like him and also thinks Snape is just misunderstood), offers this observation:

Hexing somebody to be for ever facially disfigured is not something a good person should do. Never, ever. No matter what the circumstances, no matter what the reason. It is not something anybody deserves. What's next? Pansy Parkinson shoots her mouth off and Harry, Ron and Nevill decide to 'shut her up' by group raping her? Hey, it shut her up, didn't it? And she was a slag anyway, so she deserved it, right?

Marionros goes on to say she never liked the Harry Potter books because it's a simplistic good vs. evil story for children the heroes' ostensible virtue fails to withstand careful literary criticism.

The Marietta situation and fans' reactions to it are further compared to Harry accidentally mutiliating Draco with a spell, Harry hypothetically playing with guns, the Enlightenment, the rise of the Christian right in US politics, psychic detectives (???), and the abuse of women in third-world countries. Marionros comments again:

Amnesty International fights - amongst other things - against the facial disfigurement of women (throwing acid in a womans face is a popular 'punishment' of 'bad' women in countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh)

I find it very strange that the permanent facial disfigurement of a girl by another girl is being brushed off as 'oh, they're just naughty children' or 'oh, it's just a prank' or, even worse, 'she deserved to be permanently disfigured' (who made friggin' Hermione judge and jury of the WW?!)

July 5, 2006: Marionros comments on a fanfic about Hermione casting the "SNEAK" hex, by a writer who has absolutely no sympathy for Marietta:

I sure hope I never encounter you in RL. God forbid you'd ever see me as a traitor. Or a bitch. Or whatever. Who knows what you'd do, if permanent facial disfigurement of a sixteen year old girl by another sixteen year old girl is your idea of justice. You'd throw vitriol in my face (popular with vindictive women in the 19th century. "Hey, bitch! I loved the man you're gonna marry! I'll make sure you'll be a blushing bride!" *splash* *augh!* *whimper* *mad howling laughter*)

Here's a thought: if you ever get pissed off at another girl, throw petrol over her and put her on fire. Not enough to actually kill her, of course. That would be unethical. But just long enough to give her permanent disfiguring scars.

July 7, 2006: Waltraute recaps all this for Fandom_wank, making references to Msscribe's Pakistani sockpuppet and fpb. Faster than you can say tl;dr, fpb is on the scene to take offense at the baseless comparison of himself to Marionros and accuse Waltraute of obsessively stalking him. But that's another wank.
