Retcon

Retcon, short for "retroactive continuity".

It is a fact of human nature that we will all experience regrets in our lives, things we wish we had or hadn't done, stuff we wish we had or hadn't said, concepts we wish we had or hadn't introduced.

Most of us cannot actually do anything about this, but canon writers and producers can, at least as far as their fictional universes go. Some wankers also think they can, but they can't, possibly because the internet is not actually a fictional universe, despite initial appearances.

Not to be confused with fanwank, which is retcon done by mere mortals (ie: fans), and does not really count.
