Selling fanfics

From Fandom wank wiki

Way back in the day, when fanfic authors wanted to share their derivative works with others, they would publish them in or submit them to fanzines, underground publications with small print runs and cover prices that would meet the necessary expenses.

Although the vast majority of fanfic is posted on the internet nowadays, there are still some people out there who haven't abandoned cold hard paper. Which is all well and good, except they sometimes disguise these stories' fanfiction origins. And charge a fair amount of money for their works. And put them up for sale on Amazon.

Indeed, fanauthors have come a long way from the 'zines of yore, but selling one's fanfiction (thinly disguised or no) is generally frowned upon.

Some Examples

  • The Wars of Avenan - Adele Sessler writes a Legend of Zelda fanfic, changes all the names, and has it published under this typical fantasy novel-style title with some nice cover art for the first book.
