Slytherfen, Meet "Slytherfanatics"
From Fandom wank wiki
April 26, 2006: Harry Potter fandom has picked up a new sockpuppet, Slytherfanatics. S/he apparently doesn't think highly of the Slytherfen's beliefs that:
- Death Eaters aren't racist
- The Slytherfen are the Cult of Nice
- Slytherfen's arguments are perfectly logical
In fact, Slytherfanatics' journal kicks off with a post addressed to Ataniell-- noted Slytherin defender-- saying the Death Eaters are racist, and quoting from Ataniell's public posts to show apparent contradictions. [1] Slytherfanatics goes on to dissect Ataniell's comments on "niceness" in fandom, complete with counterexamples. [2]

O RLY?
This doesn't go over well. Ataniell announces she's leaving the Harry Potter fandom. [3]
On Fandom Wank, some doubt her sincerity.[4]
AJ Hall enters the fray with parentheses galore and random potshots against the American educational system.[5] Slytherfanatics strikes back with a post on logical fallacies, with examples provided by AJ Hall. [6]
This doesn't go over well, either.
We also learn that Gryffindor is a deadly insult. [7]
Who knew?
Sequels
This wank generated a series of sequels:
- April 28, 2006: Ishtar79 claims Fandom Wank runs Harry Potter fandom. Right...[8]
- May 1, 2006: Teratologist lets us know Fandom Wank isn't just the Mean Girls, we're like supporters of the War in Iraq. (Also, The Incredibles is a "crypto-facist bowl of nut crunch.") Uh huh... [9]
- May 2, 2006: Teratologist responds to being on Fandom Wank, and commenters recall the glory days of usenet flamewars. You know, when everyone had civil discussions. [10]
Quotes
- "Pureblood prejudice has nothing to do with blood. Nothing at all.
But don't dare call ataniell93 a Death Eater apologist. She's just explaining the text for the linguistically lazy." - Slytherfanatics [11] - "Look, sweeties, I know that this is going to be difficult for the hard-of-thinking (NB: 'hard-of-thinking' is not, repeat, not a racist expression. It is an insult. Repeat after me: 'There are some insults which do not need to be racially motivated to be insulting.' There. Isn't that going to add variety to your life from now on?) It is possibly offensive to those who are classed as learning-disabled (most of whom, in my personal experience, look like sodding Einstein next to the rank and file of those members of HP online fandom who participate in stupid wanks like the one upon which I am currently commenting, but let it pass, let it pass). But insulting disabled people is not racism. In fact, it may well be offensive bigotry. In fact, it almost certainly is offensive bigotry." - AJ Hall [12]
- "It's hard to tell with all the parentheses, but...did AJ Hall just accuse herself of offensive bigotry?" - theantifooosh[13]
- "Especially those of you who may have received an American education (Careful! Careful! I see you swaying forward, like hounds on the scent (simile). But that still wasn't a RACIST insult. If anything, it was a geo-political insult, especially since I took pains not to distinguish between North America, South America or Central America)." - AJ Hall [14]
- "Sadly, my American education was not so poor as to render the grammar here less than excruciating." - theantifooosh [15]
- "Is ajhalluk a LISP programmer? I hope not, 'cos that thing's never going to run." - llama_treats [16]
- "Oh god, enough with the brackets. (Not that I dislike brackets, but brackets within brackets (really) are just annoying and the people who use them are utter morons. Careful! Careful! I know you are waiting like corgis after table scraps, ready to pounce on me (comparison). But I was not insulting the intelligence of people who obsessively use brackets. (I might have been, but you lot have probably received an American education.))" - an anonymouse [17]
- "The problem is that everyone's parents say that sort of thing (and everyone says it when they're parents) and no-one chirps up and says, 'Well, actually I am racist.' Because 1) no-one is racist in their own head; and 2) as a matter of sheer practicality the children probably will in fact be worse off being half- whatever than full- something, so it isn't that the cautious advice is wrong precisely, just that the downside is worth it (or so you hope) for the theoretical upside or that one has to suffer and inflict suffering on one's family for the Greater Good, or the principle of it, or whatever." - AJ Hall [18]
- "I have never seen people more desperate to be oppressed victims in my life." - Snacky [19]
- "Ah, The Incredibles. What a disappointing crypto-facist bowl of nut crunch that was." - teratologist [20]
COMEDY GOLD
- Wherein Ataniell proves she hasn't quite gone cold turkey on Fandom Wank after all, and Helkamaria provides the perfect summary...
| “ | Ataniell: "Wait a minute. These are the people who think AJ Hall was being racist when she pointed out that interracial children actually do have a difficult time in the world in some places and that relatives who say that sort of thing may actually believe they are being helpful, even though they aren't. *facepalms* Because of course it's horribly, horribly racist not to tell people that if they just do the right thing, love will conquer all and flowers will bloom under their feet."
