It is usually, but not always, fairly easy to tell which. Any lingering confusion is likely attributable to the fact that a variety of grain-smut is known, when consumed by humans, to cause a variety of sicknesses including hallucinations and witch trials, and certain varieties of porn-smut have been known, when viewed by humans, to cause wank.
