The fandom that gave birth to a thousand bad Mary Sue fanart pieces on deviantART, Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game series published by Sega and developed by an in-house studio named, conveniently enough, Sonic Team. Mario notwithstanding, Sonic is easily the largest fandom (mostly) based on a platform game.

The basic plot of a Sonic game is thus: Dr. Robotnik (or Dr. Eggman, whichever you prefer) goes after the Chaos Emeralds which would aid him in his goal to Rule The World. To aid him in this quest, he turns cute little animals into his robot slaves. Sonic's mission is usually to beat Robotnik, save the animals, and retrieve the Chaos Emeralds (though not necessarily in that order).

The Sonic games also feature a number of supporting characters, including Miles "Tails" Prower (Sonic's friend, a two-tailed fox with a knack for mechanics), Knuckles the Echidna (the hotheaded protector of the Master Emerald), and Amy Rose (a hedgehog [?] who is Sonic's self-proclaimed girlfriend). In some Sonic games they're playable, while in others, they merely serve in supporting roles.

There are also a few Sonic animated shows, as well as a comic book series, all with their own takes on the Sonic canon.
