A sorting community is a subculture, typically on LiveJournal, in which new members are categorized according to the four Hogwarts Houses in the Harry Potter series. By their nature, sorting communities encompass multiple LJ communities, each simulating different aspects or departments of Hogwarts. Once you're sorted, you can pretend you're in seventh grade all over again! Wouldn't that be great?
The real live fictional Hogwarts handles its own sorting with a magical Sorting Hat, which renders all decisions in a fair and unimpeachable manner. Sorting communities have to make do by subjecting newbies to a rigorous application process, judged by mods who are not magical, fair, or unimpeachable. Aside from typical elitism issues, sorting wank usually involves an applicant having s/h/it's heart set on a particular House only to be sorted elsewhere or squibbed altogether.
