Tags are words or phrases that users of many blogs and journaling systems (including LiveJournal) can employ to help organize and categorize posts. They're very helpful for the more obsessive sort of fan. (In other words, all of them.)
In some communities, tagging is not just used as categorization, but as snarky commentary on the post. For example, in fanficrants, members will watch a wanky post eagerly to see when the mod tags will appear. And after JournalFen upgraded its LJ code to a version allowing tags, wankas soon began employing them with glee.
