Talk:Nothing is like the Nazis

From Fandom wank wiki

A quick suggestion: this page should probably be retitled "Staying Off Fandom_Wank for Wankers". --Cheers, Reeve

Harmonians

You know, this would be good advice for Harmonians as well. Perhaps they need it more than anyone else (with the possible exception of MsA). Lumping everyone who ships Harry/Hermione into the group of a handful of vocal posters on Portkey is rather wanky in itself. --Thephotoman 22:42, 21 February 2006 (GMT)

The problem is that this article is quoting three posts by isntitironic. That's its purpose. While we can argue about whether the advice would be useful for Harmonians as well-- which of course it would-- you're altering the content to something that isn't what isntitironic posted. -- Avocado 22:50, 21 February 2006 (GMT)
Oh. Should teach me to read the original linked article before doing crazy shit. --Thephotoman 03:24, 22 February 2006 (GMT)
Hmm... Avocado, maybe I should've said what you did during the first round of reversions-- ^_^;;; Ahh well, no harm done, and thanks. --Reeve 04:01, 24 February 2006 (GMT)

Ummm, is it really appropriate to edit direct quotes for grammar? -- Wankprophet

My feeling is no (or, believe me, many articles would look very different). I'll wait for others to weigh in before rolling back, though. -- Avocado 21:07, 8 May 2006 (BST)
Honestly, I think it is, if there is no change in the meaning. Hence the edit.--Thephotoman 22:06, 8 May 2006 (BST)
I suppose the reaction could vary from person to person, but I'd certainly be a little annoyed if you did that when quoting me. Unless you asked first. Editing direct quotes isn't a good policy unless absolutely necessary to create clarity, and then you indicate that you've changed the original wording (i.e. with square brackets and possibly a note.) Academia has ruined me, I know.-- Wankprophet
I suppose we could put it in brackets or add a sic or something. And yes, if we normally edited quotes, I'm sure we'd do a lot more than add links. --Mindset 22:38, 8 May 2006 (BST)
I'm reverting. I think editing direct quotes is opening a can of worms. We all wish we'd said things in a more clever way, managed to get our html tags right for once, and not omitted that damned letter. Things end up here because someone thinks they're worth quoting despite those issues. -- Avocado 22:51, 8 May 2006 (BST)

So, is this a guideline or a quote? If it's the former, then we should be making sure that it's presentable and relevant. I have half a mind to go in there and fix the URL, which won't take you to Fandom Wank, but yields a 404 error, in addition to making a few updates (Harmony wanks are now at the Cornfield, and therefore wouldn't show up on the F_W main page).

If it's the latter, then it doesn't need to have its own page, but instead belongs on the page about that wanka or on Metaquotes on JournalFen. After all, the primary purpose of setting up the Wiki was to document the in-jokes in Fandom_Wank, not to provide direct quotes from various wanks.

Yeah, I'm wanking. I fully expect this to show up in wankitywank within the next 24 hours. If it isn't there then, I'll post it myself. --Thephotoman 04:18, 9 May 2006 (BST)

It's a quote, and may serve as a guideline. It's primary "Random fandom" though, which is meta funny stuff. And this isn't a quote of a wank, it's a quote of a wank comment. And I thought we've all been served pretty well much of the fact that the purpose of this wiki is whatever HnK wants it to be. Wank if you like, but you're being far too serious about an "m". Why, one might think you were still annoyed about the H/Hr things you wanted to change three months ago... --Mindset 05:12, 9 May 2006 (BST)
To be honest, I don't give a damn about the Harmonians. However, the fact is that if we're going to treat it as a quote, then it doesn't need its own page. This is the second time I've personally been confused by the purpose of this page, and I'm thinking that if I get confused, the odds are fairly good that I'm not the only one. Perhaps someone should, you know, explain "random fandom", as I didn't even know what the hell you were talking about. It's just that the page is presented in an informational way, totally unlike the quotes in other places. Of course, if we want to get really technical, we'd probably need to ensure that we have the original poster's consent to even reproduce the entire text here in quoted form. I mean, it's not likely that the OP is going to care whether it's quoted in full, as it's a fairly unimportant quote about fandom (in the long term). However, my understanding of law is about that of the average Internet lawyer, so I'm kinda talking out of my ass on this point, but I can see it as a liability. At the very least, they are good guidelines for those who would wish to remain unmentioned on F_W, and that's why I see them being relevant to the Wiki, not because they're just some metaquote (for which, as I said before, there's the metaquotes comm on JF). Perhaps if we were allowed to add commentary about the posts, most of my issues with the page would be resolved. After all, I use the Wiki to get background on wank, not just some random, albeit funny, quotes someone came up with in a wank. --Thephotoman 05:56, 9 May 2006 (BST)
Wow, this is like meta, only that really boring meta found on the backs of kids cereal boxes. You know, the ones with the three-letter word jumbles and the maze that you couldn't get lost in if you tried your damndest while wearing a blindfold and simultaneously playing with your green clovers and purple nurples. Yeah, that kind of meta. Okay, I concede I'm not very involved over here and rarely pop up, so I have no idea what the issue is between y'all, but this isn't really a major issue -- the wiki is not serious business. I was simply pointing out that deliberate misquotage, even minor, really isn't a good thing regardless of where you do it. Past that, we're just here to be enlightened and entertained at the same time. -- Wankprophet
Yeah, I never said it was the entertaining kind of meta. I just said I was wanking. Finals have me quite frustrated, so I need to kill a few kittens by letting out my inner pedantic grammarian. Or something. In conclusion, getting lulz is SERIOUS BUSINESS, yo. --Thephotoman 07:05, 9 May 2006 (BST)
