Usage
- {{quote|Insert the text of the quote here.}}
- will display a nicely formatted blockquote.
- {{quote|Insert the text of the quote here.|source=Person quoted, citation, etc.|display=block}}
- will display a formatted blockquote with a source. At the moment "display=block" is required for the source to appear -- it may be removed eventually if I can figure out how.
Both quote text and quote source can contain wikilinks, formatting, and HTML. No quotation marks are necessary.
Example #1 - Simple blockquote, no source
produces:
| “ | I never spent much time in school, but I taught ladies plenty. It's true I hire my body out for pay, hey hey. I've gotten burned over Cheryl Tiegs, blown up for Raquel Welch. But when I end up in the hay, it's only hay, hey hey. I might jump an open drawbridge, or Tarzan from a vine. 'Cause I'm the unknown stuntman that makes Eastwood look so fine. | ” |
Example #2 - Blockquote with paragraphs, no source
The template works even if there's a line break in your quote text, like so:
Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem and no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.}}
| “ | In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground.
Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem and no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team. | ” |
Example #3 - Blockquote with a source
Don't forget the "display=block", or your source won't show up.
| “ | Rocket Robin Hood, the happy outlaw of outerplanetary space, is the direct descendant of Robin Hood of old. He's fast, with a joyful laugh, a ready jest, and a quiver full of futuristic arrows. Robin robs from the cosmic rich to give to the astral poor. He's fun. He's fantastic. Rocket Robin Hood, merriest of the Merry Men in the astounding year 3000. | ” |
Comments
This template is not recommended for quote lists in wank write-ups -- rather, it's designed to make blockquotes stand out on a page. The template basically exists because I saw it in use on Wikipedia, and thought, "Ooh, cool, I wonder if it would work here?" And then I discovered, no, not as such, because we're using an older version of MediaWiki software. :( But I hashed out an equivalent, so yay. Much like Template: Image, it's not required, but it will make your blockquotes look nicer. :) --Mindset 01:22, 2 February 2007 (GMT)
Note: Equal signs seem to mess up the template for some reason. If your quote includes an equals sign, like in a LJ url "thread=12345", please replace the = with its encoded equivalent %3D.--Mindset 02:33, 2 February 2007 (GMT)
- Just discovered: throwing <nowiki> tags around the equals sign, like so: <nowiki>=</nowiki> also seems to fix this problem, even on URLs. --Mindset 21:50, 11 February 2007 (GMT)
- FYI, Wikipedia has a handy article on percent encoding, in case you need to know how to convert other characters besides = --Jim Smith 05:51, 31 March 2007 (BST)

Your version of Mediawiki has the <noinclude> tag, which if you like, you can use to place the directions for the template IN the template page itself, rather than on a talk page. Which can be rather useful. I would do it myself, but I R n00b on this wiki, so I won't. Tfo 18:26, 23 August 2007 (BST)
- It could be useful, but I kinda like having it here, since I don't think the template will work as examples on the template itself. I mean, it might be possible, but the recursion bothers me on a personal level. ;) Besides, it's easier to have instructions plus comments on a discussion page, really. --Mindset talk 00:29, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
