The emotional impact of a statement is not evidence of its truth.

Corollary: The fact that someone "felt the need to respond" has no bearing on the truth of the statement.

Example: "Everyone who writes R-rated Harry Potter fic is a pedophile."
"I resent you calling me a pedophile!"
"Well, there must be some truth to my accusation or you wouldn't be offended by it."
