The Lawnmower Threat

July 11, 2006: Harry Potter fan Anise was to present her sparkly theory about Love Potions and shipping at the HP fan convention Lumos. Sandyclaws68 thought Anise's theory was stupid, so she told her convention-going friends:

"I swear, at Numbus Anise's ass better be grass and y'all the lawnmowers, or I will be severly disappointed! :(" [1]

Anise took this as a threat to her personal safety and reported the post to the Lumos organizers. Sandyclaws68 then posted a long explanation of how no threat was intended [2] and then linked I_Wank to it. [3] The general consensus there was that Sandyclaws68 was misusing the community because her post wasn't controversial or wanky at all. No one could possibly have thought it was a serious threat in the first place.

That impression was wrong.

“	Apparently, some material has been added in response to my reporting this post to FAP. I haven't read it, because I don't want to waste any more psychic energy on this insanity than absolutely necessary. However, the Lumos organizers have taken it seriously enough to add extra security at the presentations. they CLEARLY weren't talking about having a debate. In that case, they would NOT have used such violent imagery. They have taken themselves out of the realm of civilized discussion, and they've become thugs. I've almost cut my foot off with a lawnmower, so I know what it's like! The truly sad part is that I've been through this kind of thing before, but on a much more serious level-- I've done extensive civil rights work in the South. I've gotten emailed and written threats before, including death threats (yep, in 2001.) Actually, I've gotten *far* more serious threats of violence if I showed up and gave a presentation before (in Washington. I went anyway, and spoke anyway. I’m hardcore,y’all.)Now, I expect this from white supremacists, but to see anything even remotely like it from HP SHIPPERS? [4]	”
