From Fandom wank wiki

Back in the day, before Livejournal became the internet hot spot, people hung out on Usenet. Imagine thousands of discussion groups, for every possible topic, and near-anonymity for posters! Imagine the wank.

They discussed the differences between the Sailor Moon anime and manga, posted Pokemon fanfics, uploaded fanart in binary form. There were flamewars, trolls, and the hated spammers. Rob Cypher was a legend.

And of course, there was wank. Glorious wank. Pairings, fanfiction, anime vs. manga, dubs vs. subs, trolls... alt.games.final-fantasy wasn't even about Final Fantasy by the time the flamers were through with it!

It's hard to say when and why Usenet stopped being popular, but we blame Livejournal.
