What Would Richard Rahl Think of This Wank?

August 29, 2006: Nominally, of course, this wank was about Mystar's efforts to edit the Terry Goodkind article on Wikipedia in line with Goodkind's wishes.

Goodkind is, as it transpires, a master... a veritable Shania Twain of the literary field. He was shoehorned by his wicked publisher into labeling his books as fantasy, when they are simply novels with characters set in a fantasy world with wizards, dragons, and magic. People mock him because they don't understand his greatness. The life of a modern philosopher is a hard one which must make it difficult for him to tolerate making money hand over fist.

But most on Fandom Wank will undoubtedly remember the evil chicken best.

Wank Report

To Be Continued?

Fortunately, the great Mystar himself appeared on Fandom Wank a month later to set the record straight.

As it turns out, we're just jealous haters trying to crush the spirits of all humanity.[1]

He hasn't yet explained the glory of the chicken.

Quotes

  • "There are those who focus exclusively on this least important element -magic - simply because people I don't know, despite my strenuous objections at the time, insisted on placing a red dragon on the cover of my work, and because of that, and who published the book, I was racked in bookstores as fantasy. As a result, in the minds of some readers I am for all time to be labeled as a “fantasy" author. So I must now follow some unstated laws of writing - I must know my place - because I've been mindlessly labeled a "fantasy" author? That, my friends, is bigotry." - Terry Goodkind, an interview, quoted in the Wank Report
  • "Shania Twain had a similar problem with country music fans who resented her because her music doesn't follow the constrained conventions of country music. She has risen above category names. For most of my fans, so have I." -ibid
  • "Hissing, hackles lifting, the chicken's head rose. Kahlan pulled back. Its claws digging into stiff dead flesh, the chicken slowly turned to face her. It cocked its head, making its comb flop, its wattles sway. "Shoo," Kahlan heard herself whisper. There wasn't enough light, and besides, the side of its beak was covered with gore, so she couldn't tell if it had the dark spot, But she didn't need to see it. "Dear spirits, help me," she prayed under her breath. The bird let out a slow chicken cackle. It sounded like a chicken, but in her heart she knew it wasn't. In that instant, she completely understood the concept of a chicken that was not a chicken. This looked like a chicken, like most of the Mud People's chickens. But this was no chicken. This was evil manifest." - Soul of the Fire by Terry Goodkind
  • "I am reminded of the book Lord of the Flies. You do not understand,
you refuse to understand; you choose to remain blind and attack out of that fear. The fear is that which puts the lie to the hollowness of your existence and the shallowness of your values. Fear that you cannot rise up and meet the challenge. It never ceases to amaze me the length people will go to in trying to impose their rule on others by posting such crap about something the supposedly dislike so much. It can only be fear that someone will find and read the series and find the good in it, find the seed of self worth, self acceptance and the ability to rise above and actually change their psycho-epistemological road map." - Mystar[2]
